Wednesday's Online Business Mistake-Your Own Domain Name

I can't believe it is Wednesday again already! This means it is time for another Wednesday's Online Business Mistake.  This is a mistake that I have made early on but only discovered recently.  Not a huge mistake and it is not going to take a big toll on your blog (this is more for blogs then business without a blog.)  Waiting too long to get your own domain name.

When Dawn's Work at Home Blog was first created in 2007, I didn't know what a blog was.  I knew I wanted to help share information about working at home with others.  I had been scammed and had many things to learn the hard way and I wanted to help others to avoid what I went through during my work at home adventures.  I read about something called a blog.  I figured I would try it, it was free too.  Blogger is a great platform, I do love it.  It helped me to learn about blogs and how to do various things to my blog.  I was now able to share valuable information easily!

So I started with the .blogspot domain as many of you know.  It was great and I was gaining a nice dedicated readership ( I thank you all my wonderful readers), raising my pagerank and also getting indexed in search engines.  All was going good.  I then very recently decided to purchase my own domain name.  Great choice I must add, but I recommend to all that you decide in the beginning of your blogging if you are going to want the free domain forever or buy one.  It was not too hard on me as this blog is almost 5 years old, but it did take some work fixing links and social profiles.  My pagerank dropped to 0 after building it up! I know that it will recover quickly and that I will grow bigger now with my own domain name, it was just discouraging at first to see various things drop.  We are still in ranks with the search engines with the new domain, phew! I also lost some of the people that were following me through Google friend connect.

All is good, I am quite happy with my decision! I just recommend to you that you decide right away if you will want to purchase a domain name or not.  It really is easier to start with the domain you are going to keep.  If you decide to wait on the domain name, you can change it later as I did.  But remember that there are more things to change the longer you wait!

As I said in the beginning, this mistake won't take a toll on your business.  It is just a lot easier for yourself to buy a domain in the beginning! I do recommend you get your own domain over the free domain name tho.  Don't let this scare you into believing otherwise, it is more professional and a way to brand yourself or business.

  1. And that is also my fear...starting over again. I am now thinking of transferring my blog into a paid hosting service and get my own domain. Or rather start a new blog in a paid hosting site with a new niche and keep my old blog in free hosting site.

  2. Hi Reyah,

It really is worth getting your own domain, it is just a lot easier if you start it out on a domain. You have a nice blog and your readers will still be able to access it through the old domain. I chose to purchase the domain name but remain hosted on Blogger. I just really like Blogger :)

If you decide to upgrade your existing blog, you will have a little bit of changes to make. It won't hurt your blog overall. This is just something that I wish I did in the beginning!

Hope you have a wonderful day!

  3. I went through a similar experience with my bipolar disorder blog. I bought my domain after about 3 months of blogging, so it wasn't that bad. But I didn't renew it in time after two years and someone scooped it up and started selling weird products from it. I had to re-do the blogspot version, change the name twice, and then finally buy another name. So I lost a lot of rank and good backlinks. But since I'm linked in with a good bipolar community on facebook(I"m not bipolar but I'm an MFT student and freelance writer) they've supported me and I'm starting to climb back up the ranks. I'm glad this is working out for you. And like a lot of your posts, it does take some effort to finally figure out this internet thingy!
